Project Safe Place

What is project Safe Place?
Project Safe Place, a project of the Youth Service Bureau, is a comprehensive outreach program for the benefit of runaway children and youth in crisis and / or at risk. It provides a network of "safe places," Located throughout the community and nation where young people can go if they need help quickly. Convenience stores, grocery chains, restaurants, fire stations, malls and other commercial locations frequented by youth, are targeted as Safe Places. A highly visible diamond-shaped sign with the recognizable yellow and black Safe Place logo is on display on front walls or windows of every Safe Place location. It is a highly effective means of reaching youth during the early stages of crisis.
How does it work?
When a youth arrives at a Safe Place site requesting help, an employee at the location calls the youth Service Bureau in turn calls a volunteer trained in crisis intervention to respond to the Safe Place site within 15 minutes. The volunteer will assess the situation at the Safe Place site and return the youth home if appropriate. If the youth is unwilling or unable to return home, a trained counselor from the Youth Service Bureau will respond.
