WE TIE THE SHOES FOR SOME OF THE WORLDS FASTEST RUNNERS
Kathy is 15 years old. At a time in life when she should be running to do something ...she's running away. There's no trophy at the end of the run. Only the stark reality of being alone, hungry, and in danger. Sadly , Kathy is but one of over 1.5 million youth who flee from home each year.
Recent studies reveal that if youth are not reached by law enforcement or social service agencies within 72 hours of being missing from home, the chances of that youth being exploited increases significantly. Forms of exploitation facing youth on the street are sexual exploitation; recruitment into prostitution and pornography; or being forced into street crimes such as shoplifting, burglary, drugs, etc. to survive on the streets.
Fortunately, in most communities there is help. It comes from programs that provide safe shelter and professional counseling to reunite the child and family. The Youth Bureau's runaway program began in 1974 as a community effort and continues to provide counseling and shelter care to runaways. Your support is needed now more than ever due to the increasing number of runaways.
Money and support for helping programs is always scarce. The Youth Service Bureau must be there to provide for the needs of youth in crisis and to assist the community in developing cost effective programs of the highest quality to meet those needs.
The Youth Service Bureau offers services to males and females, 10-21 years of age and their families.
These services include: 24- hour crisis intervention; individual, family, and group counseling; temporary shelter care; advocacy, information and referral; community education; and volunteer involvement programs.
All services are free and confidential.
